Kindergarten, First and Second Grade
The Elementary program follows the New York State Learning Standards with STEAM. Children are now more focused on State Core Curriculum objectives including a significant amount of above-standard grade level concepts.
Each year the teacher and teacher assistant work together to create a unique theme in the classroom. Reading and writing instruction is based on the level of the child as an individual, not on the class as a whole. The low teacher-student ratio, multi-grade class allows for flexibility, which is very beneficial for the students. Furthermore, with a multi-grade classroom, the children learn how to be leaders as they help the younger students. We learn through both modern technology and traditional activities. Daily math lessons, weekly spelling tests, and monthly theme research projects will prepare the children well for the future. During weekly computer lab classes, students spend part of the year learning how to code. The children use the Blockly language on code.org.
The other part of the year is spent teaching the children how to use a word processor and enjoy publishing and writing pieces that they have created.
